#3 - (Don’t Fear) The Dollmaker

Hey howdy, partners. I know what you’re thinking — back so soon, Clarity? Well, I didn’t want to give you time to miss me… did it work?

As always, let’s start with the updates. If you haven’t seen Kennedy Claire Walsh’s post featuring the doll I made her yet, what are you doing? Kidding, but seriously, go look. I certainly did not expect her to do a full unboxing post, and let me tell you, I was wrapping up the day at my boring desk job (ew) when all of the sudden my phone started blowing up. I thought someone had died!

That is my backwards way of thanking you all for the outpouring of love. There are thousands more of you now than there were before, so welcome! I hope you’ll stick around! And, of course, a big thank you to Kennedy, who went above and beyond to shout me out in such a lovely and thoughtful way. And hey, you might see me making a doll for another Walsh soon… can’t confirm or deny! Wink wink.

Speaking of special dolls I probably shouldn’t be revealing yet, I have not one, not two, but three character dolls being made for their respective actors! What’s even more special is that two of them are from the same movie… any Fear Street fans reading this? I couldn’t be more excited to announce that I will be making Sam and Deena for Olivia Scott Welch and Kiana Madeira! I am already picturing how precious they are going to look when I film them together. Oh, and don’t worry, I’ll be posting plenty of process pictures on the ol’ Instagram channel (scroll down to the last few paragraphs of this entry if you don’t know about Club Clarity).

Looping back to Kennedy’s video (as a super subtle segue into this week’s soapbox speech), I always find it hilarious that when a post — either one of mine or someone’s post about me — blows up online, I see a number of comments about how “creepy” the dolls are. It always takes me by surprise. Creepy? To me, they are the furthest thing from it. It’s such a foreign concept to me. I suppose that having at least ten dolls in my room at all times, staring at me, or the fact that I am quite literally making them with my hands, may have desensitized me from ever feeling unnerved by them…

Or we’ve been so thoroughly conditioned to view dolls as scary by the media we consume that we’ve assigned them meaning never intended for them. Damn you, Annabelle and Chucky. I mean, how is it that an object meant to bring comfort to children is now viewed as something unsettling? Because they are made to resemble humans, and therefore we worry they have souls, and murderous little minds of their own? Because we imagine them opening their plastic eyes at night and watching us sleep?

Regardless of the reason, it seems there will always be a stigma against dolls, and those of us who make or collect them. Well, I personally would be thrilled to find that my dolls are secretly alive. Every night would be wine and gossip night!

Anyway, being called creepy is a compliment.

Let’s wrap this up, shall we? Allow me to now threaten you with a good time — there is a channel on my Instagram you can join to have messages from me sent directly to your inbox! I send polls, process pictures, and updates, so if you are tired of waiting on these blog posts for news (I don’t blame you) feel free to join! You’ll find it on my Instagram profile right under my Linktree — a little button titled “Club Clarity.” But remember: the first rule of Club Clarity is that we do not talk about Club Clarity… except me… just this once.

Stay creepy, creeps.

xo, Clarity ♡
